How the Float Switch Protects Your System
The float switch sits inside or near the condensate drain pan under your indoor air handler or in the attached PVC line. As the AC runs, it pulls moisture from the air and channels it out through a small drain. When that drain is blocked, water backs up, the float rises, and the switch cuts power to the compressor to prevent an overflow onto the floor, ceiling, or attic below.
This shutoff can feel alarming because the whole system stops cooling at once, but it's actually working as intended. The real issue is almost always upstream — something is preventing water from draining normally, and that blockage needs to be addressed before cooling can safely resume.
Common Reasons the Float Switch Trips
Several conditions can cause condensate to back up and trigger the safety switch. These are the most frequent causes reported in humid climates like Chattanooga.
Algae, dust, and debris build up inside the drain line over time, especially during peak cooling months, and eventually block water flow entirely.
An older or corroded drain pan can hold standing water or leak internally, keeping the float elevated even after the line is cleared.
If the condensate line was installed without enough downward slope, water drains slowly and can pool near the float switch.
A coil that has frozen and then thawed can release more water than the drain system handles at once, tripping the switch temporarily.
Restricted airflow from a dirty filter can contribute to coil freezing, which indirectly leads to excess condensate and a tripped switch.
